Article by Rep. Dan Kristiansen – The newest member of the 39th District team: Rep. Elizabeth Scott

As I mentioned in my last article to our local chambers of commerce, there are many changes in Olympia this year. We have a new governor and several new state officials. The boundaries of the 39th District have slightly changed due to last year’s redistricting process. Kirk Pearson is now serving in the Senate after many distinguished years in the House of Representatives. And I am most pleased to welcome the newest member of the 39th District team, Rep. Elizabeth Scott of Monroe.
Rep. Scott brings an extensive background in education, having taught English as a second language at four community colleges in Washington. She’s also taught in Illinois, China, and the United Arab Emirates. In the Legislature, she has been tapped to serve as assistant ranking member on the House Early Learning and Human Services Committee. She’s also serving on the Capital Budget Committee and the House Higher Education Committee. Her perspective will be very important as issues of education come to the forefront during this scheduled 105-day session.
I am also impressed with her support for our small business owners across the district and her strong desire to improve the job market. In fact, on her Web site: houserepublicans.wa.gov/Scott, Rep. Scott tells how important these issues are to her: “My top priority is to curb government spending and decrease regulations in order to spur the economy and job-creation. I am working to improve education by allowing more choices; caring for our most vulnerable and public safety are my priorities as well.”
Since Jan. 14 when we were sworn into office on the first day of the 2013 session, it has been a privilege to work with my new seatmate and our new Sen. Pearson, as we strive to provide the best representation for the citizens in our district. We welcome your input and involvement as we work to improve education, provide safer streets and neighborhoods, and adopt solutions that will get Washington working again.
