Statement from House Republican Leader Dan Kristiansen on today’s court ruling on I-1366

King County Superior Court Judge William Downing ruled I-1366 unconstitutional today. Voters passed the initiative last November. House Republican Leader Dan Kristiansen issued the following statement on today's court ruling:“Today's court ruling is disappointing for the majority of voters who have told us six times they want it to be more difficult for the Legislature to raise taxes. Our court system has once again ignored the intent of voters. While it's possible the state Supreme Court could rule I-1366 constitutional, I don't think very many people have confidence in this outcome.

“Regardless of what the state Supreme Court decides to do, our caucus position is that the Legislature should move forward with a bill that would send a constitutional amendment to voters that would require a supermajority vote for tax increases. We will put forward legislation to accomplish this soon. It appears changing our state constitution is the only way to ensure what the voters have told us they want repeatedly actually gets implemented.”
